Visiting Scholar from Hungary Joins William Paterson University Faculty for Spring Semester

Judit Farkas, an associate professor of pedagogy of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, is currently a visiting scholar at William Paterson University in Wayne for the spring 2001 semester.

A specialist in the theory of teaching physical education, Farkas is teaching four courses for the University's Department of Exercise and Movement Sciences. In addition to two sections of Fitness for Life, she is team teaching Curriculum and Teaching Physical Education in Elementary School and Curriculum and Teaching Physical Education in Secondary School with William Paterson faculty members Carolyn Masterson and Susan Laubach.

"Since my expertise is in pedagogy, I teach theory, and I also add an international flavor," Farkas says. "I can offer the students a comparison of how educational systems are organized and how they must learn to bring good practice to their classrooms when they graduate."

While on campus, Farkas will participate with her department colleagues in an international research project on team teaching, and will also develop a journal article on comparative physical education policies.

As a visiting scholar, Farkas is interested in learning about the development of the American higher education system. "Europe is experiencing the same social and educational systems changed faced by the United States 30 or 40 years ago," she explains. "The information I gather here at William Paterson can help my university as it continues to develop."

A graduate of the Hungarian University of Physical Education in Budapest with bachelor's and master's degree in physical education and adapted physical education, Farkas earned a master's degree in education at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. She holds a doctoral degree in education from Eotvos University, Budapest, Hungary.

From 1993 to 1998, Farkas was director of the International Studies Office at the Hungarian University of Physical Education and from 1999 to 2000 headed the university's Department for Research and Doctoral Studies. In 2000, the Hungarian University of Physical Education merged with two other universities of become Semmelweis University, where Farkas is now a faculty member.
