PORTRAITS OF WILLIAM PATERSON
UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEES ON EXHIBIT Marvin Friedman, New Jersey artist, reinvented himself as a portraitist after a successful career in illustration. His latest exhibit features portraits of a variety of William Paterson University faculty, administration and professional staff. The works will be on view in the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University in Wayne from September 13 through October 12. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Early in his career, Friedman created illustrations for the "New Yorker," "Playboy," the "Saturday Evening Post," and "Life" magazines. He also illustrated more than 500 restaurants for "Gourmet." After a dark period in his life, he emerged with a new vision of portraiture. FriedmanÕs style captures the spirit of his subject in watercolor, pencil and text. The text, like the painting, includes both light and dark and can be both appealing and disconcerting. Friedman composes the text based on interviews with the subject and incorporates the text separately framed and displayed with the portrait as a diptych. The William Paterson portraits include a dean, a vice president, a division director, and students. Gallery director, Nancy Einreinhofer, said of the show, "This intimate look into some of our University family brings an endearing human quality to their lives and encourages the viewer to examine how we view people." "Marvin Friedman Ð Painting William Paterson People" is one of three shows exhibited concurrently. Also in the Ben Shahn Galleries are "John Goodyear Ð From Painting to Sculpture," on view in the Court Gallery, and the "University Faculty Exhibit" on display in the South Gallery. All exhibits are free and open to the public and are wheelchair accessible. For additional information, please call the Ben Shahn Galleries at 973-720-2654. This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
