FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE BY BILL STEWART ON VIEW AT WILLIAM PATERSON'S BEN SHAHN GALLERIES A selection of ceramic sculpture
by the acclaimed artist Bill Stewart will be showcased in the Ben Shahn
Galleries at William Paterson University in Wayne from October 22 through
November 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission is free. A reception for the exhibit will be held on Thursday,
October 25 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Galleries. The one-person show, on view
in Ben Shahn's Court Gallery, features a variety of Stewart's figurative
works sculpted in clay. Forms such as animals, birds, human figures, traditional
vessels, and tools and machine parts are assembled to create fragmented,
complicated and tantalizing works of arts. Stewart employs two very different
palettes for his glazes: some of the works are vividly colored, while
others are swathed in a monotone, metallic black. "My belief in the equal
union of materials, process and content remains vital," Stewart said
in an article in Ceramics Monthly magazine. "I believe as an artist
I must continue to gamble, abandoning the security of explanation for
the allure of the subconscious response to my world. To do so, one must
occasionally reach inside to the secret past or plunge into the absurd." Stewart's exhibit is one of
three shows on view concurrently in the Ben Shahn Galleries. On view in
the South Gallery is "The Artist Revealed. Portraits from the Collection
of Alma Alabilikian and Peter Paone," which features photographs
of famous artists in their studios. In the East Gallery, artist Susan
Bee displays a collection of her paintings and works on paper in an exhibit
titled "Ice Cream Sunday." All exhibits are free and open to
the public and are wheelchair accessible. This exhibit is made possible
in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department
of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. # # #
