WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

William Paterson University has been chosen as the U.S. site of the Fourth Annual Italo-American conference, "Society, Identity, and Communication Technology: Italy and the United States in the 21st Century," a multidisciplinary social science conference to be held on campus May 20 to 22.

The conference is expected to attract prominent scholars from both countries who were invited to submit abstracts relating to the conference theme and to issues of global culture, beyond state and nation, new liberties for a new age, structural change, values, diversity and identity. Previous conferences were held in Italy.

Presentations of papers will be held in the Atrium auditorium on the campus in Wayne. On Thursday, May 20, session one, "Cultural Heritage and Identity," will begin at 10 a.m., and session two, "Beyond State and Nation," will be held at 2 p.m. Sessions three, four and five are scheduled for Friday, May 21. Session three, "Global Culture and Communication," will be held at 9:30 a.m., session four, "New Liberties in a New Age," at 1:30 p.m. and session five, "Values and Value Conflict," will begin at 4 p.m.

The conference moves to Hunter College in New York City on Saturday, May 22, to room 615 Hunter West at 9:30 a.m. as session six, "Structural Change," commences. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend all sessions.

Vincent Parrillo, a professor of sociology at William Paterson, is the
U. S. coordinator of the event. He has been actively involved in the organization and has presented papers at the previous conferences, which were held at the Universita degli Studi di Pisa.

"New Jersey has one of the largest contingents of Italian-Americans in the country," Parrillo explains. "This conference is planned as an exchange of knowledge and culture."
