PAINTINGS BY JUDITH MURRAY ON DISPLAY AT BEN SHAHN GALLERIES

"Large scale abstractions focused on color and surface" characterizes the work of Judith Murray, whose paintings will be on display at the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University in Wayne from October 25 through December 3.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Thursday, October 28 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the galleries. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

For nearly her entire career as a painter, Murray has been using the limited palette of red, black, white and yellow. In her recent work "the feathered brushwork has become plainly visible" and "the palette has lightened, shifting toward corals, pinks, yellows, whites and grays " writes Lilly Wei in "Art in America." The paintings, some of which are 8' x 9', are among the largest Murray has ever created.

Murray spends several months in the Florida Keys every year and the influence of its scenery can be seen in her work. Although her paintings are totally abstract, "they contain references to the landscape, sea and sky," says Nancy Einreinhofer, director of Ben Shahn Galleries and curator of the exhibit. After its display at William Paterson, the exhibit will travel to S.U.N.Y. at Potsdam, N.Y.

Murray received her bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts from Pratt Institute in New York. Her artwork has been exhibited at numerous galleries in New York City and throughout the United States and is part of many public and selected private collections. Murray's work has been the topic of several reviews in Arts Magazine and The New York Times, among other publications.

Also on view in the Ben Shahn Galleries from October 25 through December 3 is "allTURNatives: Form and Spirit." The exhibition "Shape and Content: Artists' Books Since 1950" also continues through December 3.
