WILLIAM GALISON TO PERFORM AS PART OF WILLIAM PATERSON'S JAZZ ROOM SERIES William Galison, one of the few players in the jazz world to have mastered the harmonica, will perform at William Paterson University on Sunday, October 17 as part of the university's 1999 fall Jazz Room Series. Galison will be joined by the William Paterson Chamber Jazz Ensemble, directed by Pete Malinverni. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $9 standard and $6 for senior citizens, non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge. Galison's distinctive harmonica sound has been heard in an impressive variety of musical contexts. He has performed with artists as diverse as rock legend Sting, jazz great Eddie Gomez, and Brazilian stars Astrud Gilberto and Toninho Horta. Recently, he made his classical debut, performing Gordon Jacob's "Suite for Harmonica and Orchestra" to critical acclaim. His harmonica has also been featured on the stage in the national tour of the Broadway musical "Big River," and on the soundtracks of many movies including "The Untouchables" and "Bagdad Café," both of which were nominated for Academy Awards. His distinctive sound is also heard anonymously on countless television shows and commercials. Galison's recording "Overjoyed" climbed to number six on the contemporary jazz charts. His second recording, "Calling You," has been critically acclaimed in Japan and is awaiting distribution in the United States and Europe. Galison has also played as a sideman on recordings by some of the legends of jazz and popular music. Recent credits include albums by Ruth Brown, Peggy Lee, Chaka Khan, The O'Jays, Jon Secada, and many others. But for all these varied recording credits, the scope of Galison's unique expression can best be appreciated in his live performance, whether in an intimate duo or with his quintet. In recent years, Galison has delighted audiences in clubs and festivals throughout the United States and around the world. Prior to the concert, Galison will be the guest for "Sittin' In," an informal, hosted talk that begins at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders. Launched in the spring of 1978, William Paterson's Jazz Room Series has earned a reputation for presenting concerts by eminent musicians in the jazz world. The series has been awarded numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and just received its third consecutive Citation of Excellence from the Council for its cultural contribution to the state.
