SAXOPHONIST JOE TEMPERLEY AND TRUMPETER RANDY BRECKER TO HIGHLIGHT WILLIAM PATERSON'S WINTER JAZZ ROOM SERIES Baritone saxophonist Joe Temperley, virtuoso jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker, and saxophonist/clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera are among the all-star lineup of jazz artists who will perform during the winter 2000 Jazz Room Series at William Paterson University in Wayne. The series, now in its 22nd season, is one of the largest and most prestigious university-sponsored jazz events in the country. The winter program will run from February 6 through March 12, 2000. The season opens on February 6 with Joe Temperley and the Eric Reed Trio. A native of Scotland, Temperley has worked with Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Joe Henderson, and toured and recorded with The Duke Ellington Orchestra. He continues to actively perform and tour internationally and is a current member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. On February 20, jazz aficionados are invited to spend an afternoon with James Williams and friends. Williams, the new director of William Paterson University's jazz studies program, is a pianist of international stature who has performed with Art Blakey and Milt Jackson. The series continues on February 27 with Randy Brecker performing with the William Paterson University Jazz Ensemble directed by David Demsey. Brecker is among the vanguard players who have set the standard for jazz trumpeting for over two decades. As a first-call studio player, he has worked with artists ranging from James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen, to David Sannborn and Frank Zappa. In 1974, with his brother Michael, Brecker established the hugely successful Brecker Brothers Band. The group reunited in the 1990s to win a pair of Grammies for "Out of The Loop." On March 5, the fiery trumpet of Ray Vega sparks with the University's high-energy Latin Jazz Ensemble led by William Paterson jazz professor and Latin jazz bandleader Chico Mendoza. Vega has an eminent reputation as a trumpeter known for both Latin and jazz, a scholar of Latin rhythms, and a great horn improvisor. One of the most versatile larger ensembles in jazz, the Nonet, led by composer-arranger and saxophonist Bill Kirchner, presents the series finale on March 12 with an array of classical arrangements and originals. Kirchner's arrangements, in addition to those for Nonet, have been recorded by Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Konitz, singer Patti Austin, and the Smithsonian Jazz Repertory Ensemble. Concerts begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. Tickets are $12 standard and $9 for non-William Paterson students, senior citizens and the William Paterson community; and free to William Paterson students. "Sittin' In," the series of preview discussions by the afternoon's featured artists or other special guests, will be presented prior to the concerts. The talks begin at 3 p.m. in Shea Center's Recital Hall 101 and are free to all Jazz Room ticketholders. For additional information, please call William Paterson's
