JAY LEONHART TRIO TO PERFORM AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY'S JAZZ ROOM SERIES

William Paterson University continues its fall 2000 Jazz Room Series on Sunday, October 15 with bassist Jay Leonhart, one of the most in-demand sidemen on the New York scene, as leader of his own trio.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $12 standard; $9 for senior citizens, non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.

Leonhart has played with most of the great jazz artists in history and has recorded with many of the pop heroes of the last 40 years, ranging from Judy Garland to Madonna, Vaughn Monroe to Sting, Stevie Wonder to James Taylor, and Liza Minelli to Carly Simon.

Leonhart has spent most of his time in New York since 1967 and has twice been named the most valuable bassist by the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences. He has toured Europe often with Bucky Pizzarelli and John Bunch in the group known as New York Swing. He also performs extensively throughout the New York area in venues as varied as the Knickerbocker and Danny's Skylight Room.

In 1977, Leonhart started writing poems and turned them into songs. He has recorded six CDs of his own songs and has many more in the works. Leonhart is currently performing in the Off-Broadway hit, "Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know," for which he wrote three songs. He will soon be opening his own show, "It's Impossible to Sing and Play the Bass."

Jay Leonhart and members of his trio will be the guests for "Sittin' In," an informal discussion with the artists presented before the concert. The talk begins at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

Launched in the spring of 1978, William Paterson's Jazz Room Series has earned a reputation for presenting concerts by eminent musicians in the jazz world. The series has been awarded numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and Citations of Excellence from the Council for its cultural contribution to the state. This program was made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
