WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO STAGE SCENES FROM CLASSIC OPERAS Scenes from the operas "The Magic Flute," "Faust," "Don Giovanni," "Rigoletto," and "The Marriage of Figaro" will be performed by members of William Paterson University's Opera Workshop on Wednesday, April 21 and Thursday, April 22. The performances, which will be staged and costumed, will begin at 8 p.m. in Shea Center 101 on campus. Tickets are $6; $5 for students. Under the direction of Stephen Bryant,
associate professor of music and director of choral activities
at William Paterson, the students will perform various works.
Bryant has accrued extensive credits in oratorio, concert and opera venues. He performed the major role of Dante in the American premiere of "Marco Polo" at the New York City Opera and the New York Times called it an "extraordinary work," adding that Bryant "made the vocalism and movement seem natural." Bryant's interpretation of Dante was recorded for Sony Classic Amsterdam and he sang the role with the Japan Philharmonic in July 1998. A member of the original cast, he performed in the opera's world premiere at the Biennale Festival in Munich, Germany, in May 1996 and at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam in June 1996. A graduate of Oberlin College Conservatory, Bryant holds master's degrees in vocal performance and choral conducting from the University of Michigan. He resides in Upper Montclair.
