THE HILLS OF WAYNE ARE ALIVE
WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC The Orchestra at William
Paterson University will present a diverse and eclectic slate of programming
highlighting local, regional and international talent during the ensembles
2001 -- 2002. Sounds vary from the minimalist
production of Michael Torke to the pomp of Britains Elgar, from
the Latin influences of Rodrigo to the Universitys own sound formed
by Professor John Link, and from old favorites Bach and Beethoven to 20th
century works by Montclairs George Walker. In each concert the composers
depth and breadth will be displayed. The core of this orchestra,
now in its 16th season, is a pool of talent drawn from the Universitys
excellent music faculty, New York area professional musicians and gifted
students. This combination makes for an exciting sound and provides the
region with a progressive professional ensemble. The three-concert season begins
as guest conductor David Wroe takes the podium for George Walkers
"Pageant and Proclamation" and Elgars "Enigma Variations."
Featured at the concert will be the Grammy Award-winning guitarist Sharon
Isbin performing Rodrigos "Concierto de Aranjuez." The
concert is scheduled for Saturday, October 20, 2001. On Saturday, February 16, 2002,
Mark Laycock takes the baton to conduct the premiere performance of John
Links Piano Concerto. Link, a University assistant professor of
music, composed the work for his colleague, pianist Gary Kirkpatrick,
University professor of music, who will perform as soloist. Also included
in the program are C.P.E. Bachs Symphony No. 2 and the perennial
favorite, Beethovens Symphony No. 5. The season finale takes place
on Saturday, April 20, 2002 with William C. Houston III conducting. Soprano
Faye Robinson will sing the New Jersey premiere of George Walkers
Pulitzer Prize-winning work, "Lilacs." Also featured at the
concert will be Torkes "Bright Blue Music" and the winner
of the Orchestras annual Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artist Competition. All concerts are at 8:00 p.m.
in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the William Paterson University
Campus in Wayne. Single ticket prices are $25 and $20 for adults, but
subscriptions are available. For information, call 973-720-2694.
