YTTREHUS IS GUEST AT FIFTH ANNUAL "COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE DAY"
AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

Yttrehus, internationally renowned composer, will be the guest for
the fifth annual "Composer In Residence Day" as part of
a Midday Artist Series concert at William Paterson University in Wayne
on Thursday, March 28.
Yttrehus will participate in a day of events devoted to his music,
beginning with an open rehearsal from 10 a.m. to noon. The concert,
which will feature the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble directed by
Raymond DesRoches, will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Shea Center. Admission
is $3. Highlights of the concert program include "Angstwagen
for Soprano and Percussion" with soprano soloist Barbara Kokolus,
a William Paterson alumna, and "Sonata for Percussion and Piano"
with faculty member Anton Vishio, pianist.
Yttrehus, who regards Schoenberg and Sessions as his principal influences,
was born 1926 in Duluth, Minnesota. He holds degrees from the University
of Minnesota-Duluth, the University of Michigan, and in 1962, received
a diploma from the Accademia Di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He studied
harmony with Nadia Boulanger, and composition with Ross Lee Finney,
Roger Sessions, Aaron Copland, and Goffredo Petrassi. He is professor
of music emeritus, Rutgers University.
Raymond Des Roches, a noted percussionist and professor of music at
William Paterson, formed the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble and the
New Jersey New Music Ensemble in 1968 and 1975, respectively. The
two groups have won critical acclaim for their performances of 20th
century music.
