WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOST STATE FINALS FOR ACADEMIC DECATHLON ON SATURDAY, MARCH 16

  • 20 teams from high schools through New Jersey to compete during day-long event
  • Event culminates with Super Quiz at 3:45 p.m. in Rec Center on campus
Two hundred and eighty students from high schools throughout the state are scheduled to compete in the 2002 New Jersey finals of the Academic Decathlon on Saturday, March 16 at William Paterson University in Wayne. The event is sponsored by William Paterson’s College of Education.

The program runs from 9:00 a.m. through 4:45 p.m. on campus. Throughout the day, 20 teams of students, who were selected in regional finals, will test their knowledge and academic skills in a series of 10 events including: six multiple-choice tests (math, science, social studies, economics, literature, and fine arts), a written essay, an interview by a panel of business persons, and a concluding Super Quiz, a public event where students will answer questions on the topic "The Internet and Society."

"There is as much cheering at the Super Quiz as you might expect at a high school athletic event," says Lisa Mantone, executive director of Academic Decathlon New Jersey. "The event provides a forum for academic prowess to be a source of excitement, inspiration and pride for students and schools."

Each team is comprised of nine students -- three with "A" averages, three with "B" averages and three with "C" averages – and nine alternates. On competition day, all team members participate in the same events, and are judged by the same criteria. The team’s final score depends on the performance of all members. Two top-scoring teams (which must be from different classifications in terms of high school size – small, medium and large) will win the privilege of representing New Jersey in the national finals April 10-13 in Phoenix, Arizona.

High schools participating in this year’s finals include: Bergen County Academies, Hackensack High School, Hanover Park High school, Indian Hills High School, Kinnelon High School, Monsignor Donovan High School, Morristown High School, Northern Burlington High School, Northern Valley Demarest High School, Northern Valley Old Tappan High School, Parsippany High School, Pascack Valley High School, Ramapo High School, Ridgewood High School, Ridgefield Memorial High School, River Dell High School, Rutherford High School, Waldwick High School, West Windsor Plainsboro North High School, and Whippany Park High School.
