WILLIAM
PATERSON UNIVERSITY SPONSORS CONFERENCE ON
APRIL 13 TO PROVIDE TOOLS FOR SUCCESS FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN AND LATINO
MEN
A conference
designed to help young men of color plan for their future by providing
them with the tools necessary for success will be held at William
Paterson University on Saturday, April 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt, three young men,
who as teenagers in Newark made a pact to become doctors, will deliver
the keynote speech at noon during the sixth annual conference, "Overcoming
the Odds: African-American and Latino Success in Todays University."
The conference
will be held in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom. Admission is
$20; group rates are available. The fee includes all sessions, meals,
and materials.
Davis is currently
completing his residency in emergency medicine at Beth Israel Medical
Center in Newark. Jenkins is pursuing a fellowship in oral medicine
and recently completed his general dentistry residency. Hunt is
currently completing his residency in internal medicine at Robert
Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Wilson Class, a tenured professor of English at Middlesex County
College, will present a lecture at 9:00 a.m. Class is also an adjunct
professor at Rutgers University in the Puerto Rican and Hispanic
Caribbean Studies Department, where he teaches courses such as The
Poetry of Protest and Topics in Puerto Rican and Hispanic Caribbean
Literature.

Participants will be able to obtain information that will enhance
their achievements through a series of workshops focusing on student
development and retention.
The conference
is sponsored by the New Jersey State Martin Luther King Commission,
the New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund Professional Association,
William Patersons Educational Opportunity Fund Program (EOF),
the Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership/J. Victor
Machuga Foundation and other campus organizations.
