WILLIAM PATERSON
UNIVERSITY ART EXHIBIT CELEBRATES PRINTMAKING
Northeast Prints
2002, a juried exhibit of works by 42 professional printmakers from
New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut and
Maine will be on view at William Paterson Universitys Ben
Shahn Galleries from March 25 through April 26. Gallery hours are
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
The show, in
Ben Shahns South Gallery, includes a variety of printmaking
media, including woodcut, etching, monotype/monoprint, lithography,
intaglio, silkscreen, and processes involving photography-derived
imagery and digital collage. The exhibit was curated by Judith Hecker,
assistant curator of prints and illustrated books for the Museum
of Modern Art in New York.
Nancy Einreinhofer,
director of the Ben Shahn Galleries, says the exhibit contains a
"variety of ideas and expressions representative of the current
East coast art world, which are explored through both the traditional
print mediums, such as etching and woodcut, and the latest digital
technology. Through this annual exhibit we are building the Universitys
collection of prints and we are excited to be acquiring such fine
examples."
Patricia Cudd
of Freehold won the grand prize for her monoprint "Sampler,"
a lithograph with hand stitching and hand stamping. As grand prize
winner, Cudd will receive a one-person show in the Ben Shahn Galleries
in spring 2003.
"The focus of my work is the world that women inherit,"
says Cudd. "Whether I utilize photographic images, both past
and present, or whether I depict the items in our lives
I explore
thoughts and ideas that are transmitted through generations, without
or in spite of words, either spoken or written."
Maureen Cummins
of Brooklyn won second prize for her silkscreen titled "Footnotes."
Virginia Bruner of Martinsville earned third prize for her digital
print "Berlin Atrium." Honorable mention awards were given
to Carlie Hewitt of Lewiston, Maine; William C. Mathie of Edinboro,
Pennsylvania; Nicole Maynard-Sahar of Tinton Falls; Erena Rae of
Highland Park; Ruth Rieber of Teaneck; and Carol Rosen of Califon.
The exhibit
is one of three shows on view concurrently in the Ben Shahn Galleries.
On view in the East Gallery is "Cityscapes: Remembrances of
Things Past," a one-person show by Carol Westfall of Jersey
City featuring her photographs of the World Trade Center, the Statue
of Liberty, and New York Harbor. In the Court Gallery, artist Lucio
Pozzi presents "People and Things 2002," a painting
in four parts that covers the four freestanding walls of the gallery
from floor to ceiling. All exhibits are free and open to the public
and are wheelchair accessible.
This exhibit
is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council
on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National
Endowment for the Arts.
