Paterson University Celebrates Womens History Month
A ceremony celebrating
the 30th anniversary of Title IX, an alumnae art exhibition, and
a conference designed to offer lessons in communication and leadership
for female students, are among the events to be held at William
Paterson University in Wayne this spring in observance of March
as Womens History Month.
During the opening
event on Tuesday, March 5, a panel of University women will discuss
Title IX, the federal law mandating equality for women in school
sports. This event will be held from 12:15 to 2 p.m., in the Machuga
Student Center on campus.
An art exhibition
featuring the works of six distinguished alumnae will be on view
during the month of March in the Machuga Student Gallery Lounge.
The art will consist of paintings, photography, and portraits done
by contemporary women artists.
"Parents
at William Paterson," a discussion geared toward students,
faculty, and staff on the challenges of combining school, work,
and family, will be held in the Student Center on Wednesday, March
6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Other scheduled
events include, "Sisterspirit," a lecture featuring Brenda
and Wanda Henson, nationally recognized human rights activists and
educators, on Friday, March 8 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Student
Center. On Saturday, March 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Fifth
Annual Sister to Sister Conference will be held in the Student Center
Ballroom, featuring keynote speaker and award-winning poet Sonia
Sanchez.
"International
Womens Day" will be celebrated on Monday, March 11 from
noon to 2 p.m. in the Student Center. Participants can join in an
informal discussion based on the topic "What is the most pressing
issue for women in todays society?"
Four women journalists
will present a panel discussion on Wednesday, March 13 from 2 to
4 p.m. in the Student Center. "Women in Print Media" will
feature University professors Tina Lesher and Liz Birge, along with
Sarah Rasmusson, an adjunct professor in the Womens Studies
Department at William Paterson, and Jennifer Pozner, a freelance
writer whose work has appeared various publications, including "Ms.,"
"Newsday," and the "Chicago Tribune." They will
offer advice on journalism careers and share their individual experiences.
An annual celebration
of the achievements of University women students, faculty, and staff
will be held in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom on Thursday,
March 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The "Eighth Annual Women of
WPUNJ Celebration" will feature a panel discussion, entertainment,
crafts, food, and more.
Womens History Month activities continue through the month
of April with speakers and events, including "Take Our Daughters
to Work Day."
