Thompson has had an eclectic career which includes politics, the
law, and acting. First elected to the Senate to finish an unexpired
term in 1994, he was voted in for a full term in 1996. He was a
member of the powerful Senate Committee on Finance, which has jurisdiction
on taxes and the Social Security and Medicare programs, and served
on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the National
Security Working Group, which observes and monitors executive branch
negotiations with foreign governments. In 2002, Thompson was elected
to the Council on Foreign Relations, which promotes improved understanding
of international affairs. In March 2002, he announced he would not
seek reelection at the end of his Senate term, citing personal reasons.
Prior to his election, he maintained law offices in Nashville and
Washington, D.C. Currently, he is back in front of the cameras filming
episodes of "Law and Order," a series on NBC where he
plays a conservative district attorney. This latest acting gig builds
on a career which has included numerous film and television roles.
