William Paterson University Presents
"Great Expectations"
A new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic novel,
"Great Expectations," will be staged at William Paterson
University from November 12 to18 in the Shea Center for Performing
Arts.
William Paterson students, faculty and alumni will take part in
the production. The performance is directed by Edward Matthews,
head of William Paterson’s theatre series. Students in music
Professor John Link’s Electronic Music II class have composed
songs for the show.
"Great Expectations" is considered by some to be Dickens’
finest masterpiece because of its utilization of plot, characterization
and style. Well received by Victorian readers, it has also been
regarded as Dickens’ darkest work.
The story begins in the marshes of the English countryside. Pip,
the main character, a terrified young man carries out an unexpected
act of kindness for an escaped convict. This sets off a series of
events, which take the young man from humble beginnings to great
expectations of a gentleman’s life. Dickens’ adored
classic is brought to life with the help of charming, odd, menacing
and memorable characters.
