WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY HOSTS GUITARFEST
2003 ON APRIL 26
– International award-winning guitarist Jorge Caballero
to perform and conduct master class
The William Paterson University Music Department presents its eighth
annual guitar festival, Guitarfest 2003, on Saturday, April 26 at
the Cheng Library Auditorium on the University campus in Wayne.
The day’s events include concerts, a master class by guest
artist Jorge Caballero and a lecture demonstration. The program
is open to all guitar enthusiasts, from high school students to
adults. Admission is $10 for one or more events.
Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with a performance by Staten Island’s
Curtis High School Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Lou Mannarino.
At noon, jazz guitarist and William Paterson University guitar instructor
Gene Bertoncini will present a lecture demonstration on jazz on
the nylon string guitar. Caballero will perform at 2:30 p.m. and
will conduct a master class for auditioned guitarists at 4 p.m.
Guitarfest 2003 will close with a William Paterson University guitar
student recital at 7 p.m.
Guest artist Caballero, a native of Peru, studied at the National
Conservatory in Lima. While there Caballero won numerous competitions
including the prestigious Walter Naumburg International Competition
which led to American concert tours with performances at Alice Tully
Hall in New York and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.,
among others. Caballero recorded his own transcriptions of Bach’s
cello suites and most recently collaborated on a CD with soprano
Theresa Santiago.
