LEWIS NASH TRIO TO PERFORM IN THE JAZZ ROOM SERIES AT WILLIAM PATERSON
UNIVERSITY
Lewis Nash, the drummer of choice for a wide range of artists, will
bring his trio to William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday,
October 12 as part of the fall 2003 Jazz Room Series.
The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing
Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or on
the day of the performance at $12 standard and $9 for senior citizens,
non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty, staff
and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.
The Lewis Nash Trio features Lewis Nash on drums, Steve Nelson on
vibes, and Peter Washington on bass. Prior to the concert, Nash and
his trio will be the guests for "Sittin’ In," an informal
discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission
is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Nash has worked with everyone from masters
of the music to the hottest young players of today. In 1981, after
moving to New York City, he joined the trio of the great jazz vocalist
Betty Carter and they toured internationally for four years. Nash
is featured on three of Carter’s recordings, including the Grammy-winning
"Look What I Got."
Nash has worked with world-renowned bassist Ron Carter, saxophonist
Branford Marsalis, trombone master J.J. Johnson, and legendary saxophonist
Sonny Rollins. His impressive discography of more than 300 recordings
includes projects with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson,
Benny Carter, Hank Jones and John Lewis, as well as Diana Krall, Joe
Lovano and Roy Hargrove. Demonstrating his stylistic diversity, Nash
is also featured on recordings by Natalie Cole, Bette Midler, Nancy
Wilson, Kenny Rankin, Melissa Manchester and George Michael.
Now in its 26th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is one
of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events
in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass
the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz
to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz – as well
as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has
won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the
New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
