William Paterson University Graduate
Student to Exhibit Life-Sized Oil Paintings of Family Residing in
Madison, NJ
|
Kimanne Smith, a graduate student pursuing
a master of fine arts degree at William Paterson University, will
exhibit 14 life-sized oil paintings of a contemporary African American
family in the Power Art Gallery from January 20 through February
12, 2004.
The Power Art Gallery is located in the Power Art Center, 25 Power
Avenue in Wayne. Power Avenue is located off Hamburg Turnpike between
Valley and Ratzer Roads.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An opening
reception will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004, from 7 to
9 p.m. Admission is free.
The exhibit, titled “A Kindred Spirit,” features oil
paintings and color monoprints of the Sallies, a family that resides
in Madison , NJ. The Sallies know Smith through the First Baptist
Church of Madison, NJ, where her husband is pastor.
Smith chose the family members as the subject of her exhibit because
of their interesting, rich history and their close-knit ties to
family, friends, church, and community. “They exemplify a
strong African American heritage that has sustained and nurtured
an historically oppressed people,” says Smith.
“The parents, Willis and Doris, have been married 50 years
and have 12 children, all of whom are successful. Most of the 12
children have their own children and reside in other New Jersey
towns and cities,” she adds.
In an artist’s statement, Smith says she embraces the rich
historical tradition of oil painting, but “challenges it by
balancing the gap between the illusion of reality and the reality
of physical paint on canvas. This is done by pushing the formal
elements (form, color, brushstroke, etc.) so that the line between
representation and abstraction begins to blur.” Smith lives
in Wayne, NJ.
