WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL
LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER, INTERSEX AND ALLY LEADERSHIP
CONFERENCE
The Third Annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and
Ally Leadership Conference will be held at William Paterson University
in Wayne on Friday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Machuga
Student Center Ballroom. Admission is free. The event is sponsored
by the University’s Women’s Center, Office of Employment
Equity and Diversity, Campus Activities and Student Leadership, Women’s
Studies Department and John Victor Machuga Foundation.
Louise Sullivan-Blum, author and associate professor of English and
creative writing at Mansfield University in Pennsylvania, will deliver
the keynote address at the conference, which is titled "Embracing
Diversity, Creating Change."
Blum, who will speak from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m., made history by teaching
the first gay and lesbian literature class at Mansfield University.
Her latest work, "You’re Not From Around Here, Are You?
A Lesbian in Small-Town America," is a memoir of her insemination
and pregnancy. A question and answer session will follow from 3:30
to 4 p.m.
The conference features two workshop blocks, which will enable faculty,
staff and students to express their feelings regarding such issues
as bisexuality, homophobia and the trials and tribulations of coming
out.
Morning workshops, to be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., include a presentation
by Arlene Scala, chair of the women’s studies department at
William Paterson University, who will speak about "Coming Out
on Campus." Other morning workshops from 11:40 a.m. to 1:10 p.m.
will include the session "Creating Change: A Roundtable Discussion."
The conference concludes with a reception from 4 to 5 p.m. for the
exhibit "Artist in Transition," featuring paintings by Julien
Alleyne.
William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities
in New Jersey, offers 30 undergraduate and 18 graduate programs through
five colleges: Arts and Communication, Christos M. Cotsakos College
of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science
