William Paterson University Observes Women’s History
Month
A tenth anniversary celebration of the Women's Center, and lectures
and films are scheduled for March as William Paterson University
observes Women’s History Month on the campus in Wayne.
Events include an opening ceremony on Tuesday, March 4 from 12:30
to 2:00 p.m. in the MSCB. Professor Linda Gordon, women's historian
and feminist activist based at New York University, will present
the keynote address.
"Women of Summer" is a documentary about the Bryn Mawr
Summer School for Women Workers where 1,700 blue collar women participated
in a controversial and inspired educational experiment from 1921
to 1938. It will be screened on Wednesday, March 5 from 7 to 9 p.m.
in the Martini Teleconference Center in Hobart Hall on campus.
A commemoration of International Women's Day will be held on Thursday,
March 6, 2003, 12:30 to 2 p.m., in the MSCB. The editors and authors
of the book "Colonize This!" will read feminist stories
written by young women of color including Daisy Hernandez, a William
Paterson alumna, and Burshra Rehman, sister of a University student,
as well as Adriana López, Erica González Martínez
and Lourdes-Marie Prophete. The event will be held on Monday, March
10 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the MSCB. Copies of the book will be available.
The University’s annual Women in Science Lecture will feature
Dr. Eliza Michalopoulou, an associate professor in the Department
of Computer Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
She will speak on Tuesday, March 11 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in Science
Hall 319. Her topic is "Tracking Whales and Finding Submarines
in the Ocean."
State Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg
will speak on "Politics and Women" on Wednesday, March
12 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., in the MSCB.
Sandi Cooper, a professor of history at the College of Staten Island,
will present a lecture on the history of women and the peace movement.
She will speak on Thursday, March 13, in the MSCB from 12:30 to
1:45 p.m.
The University’s Women’s Center will hold a gala 10th
anniversary celebration on Tuesday, March 25 from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
in the MSCB. The program will celebrate of the achievements of women
students, staff and faculty and includes entertainment, crafts,
food and fun.
The Women's
Studies Department will sponsor a film and discussion on Tuesday,
March 25 at 7:00 p.m. "The ERA: Unfinished Business for the
Constitution," a documentary screened in the David and Lorraine
Cheng Library auditorium followed by a lecture by Roberta W. Francis,
Founding Chair of the ERA Task Force, National Council of Women's
Organizations. A discussion will follow the film and lecture. Film,
7:00 p.m. Refreshments, Paterson Room, 8:30 p.m.
The month’s activities conclude with a panel discussion of
careers in women’s studies on Tuesday, March 25 from 7 to
9 p.m. in the room 258 in the Atrium.
