Clark Terry to Perform in the Jazz Holiday Celebration at William
Paterson University
Clark Terry, a legendary jazz trumpetor and
educator, will appear with the William Paterson Jazz Ensemble as
part of the jazz holiday celebration at William Paterson University
in Wayne, on Saturday, December 11.
The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing
Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or
on the day of the performance at $12 standard and $9 for senior
citizens, non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty,
staff and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.
Terry and the William Paterson Jazz Ensemble, under the direction
of David Demsey, coordinator of jazz studies, will perform holiday
music, including excerpts from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's
“Nutcracker Suite.” Prior to the concert, Terry will be the guest
for “Sittin In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in
room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.
Originally from St. Louis, Terry established himself as a world-class
jazz artist in the 1940's and 1950's. He played with musicians like
Count Basie and Duke Ellington and blended the St. Louis tone of
his youth with contemporary styles. Terry also played in the NBC-TV
Orchestra for twelve years before he left to form his own bands
and work on recordings.
He began recording on Oscar Peterson's Pablo Label and made a duet
album with Peterson as well as developing his own works. Terry was
inducted into the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Hall of Fame
in 1991. He has also received an honorary doctor of humane letters
degree from William Paterson University.
