English Professor to Discuss Relationship Between Words and Visual
Images in Lecture at William Paterson University Library on December
5
James Hauser, a professor of English at William
Paterson University and a photographer, will discuss the relationship
between words and pictures during a lecture at the University in
Wayne on Sunday, December 5 at 2 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium.
Admission is free. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the
David and Lorraine Cheng Library; a reception will follow the lecture.
The lecture is titled “Camera Lucida: How the Photograph Speaks.”
“We often declare that a picture is worth a thousand words,” Hauser
says. “My talk will focus on what this statement might mean. How
do pictures speak to us, and what kinds of things do they say?”
Hauser will examine pictures and words from daily life, including
images from the news, famous and not-so-famous art photos and ordinary
family photographs.
Hauser, who joined the William Paterson faculty in 1971, teaches
courses in film studies and modern American and British literature.
He is also the director of the University's Writing Across the Curriculum
program, which offers writing roundtables and workshops for faculty
who wish to integrate writing-intensive activities into their courses
in various disciplines. A popular teacher and speaker, he was chosen
in 1991 to represent William Paterson at the American Association
for Higher Education Forum on Exemplary Teaching at its annual meeting.
In addition to his academic interest in literature and the visual
image, Hauser has developed his own avocation as a photographer
and his photographs are included in a number of public and private
collections. He holds a doctorate in British and American literature
and comparative literature from the University of Pennsylvania.
