Sandra DeYoung Named Dean of the College of Scienceand Health at William Paterson University

Dr. Sandra DeYoung has been appointed dean of the College of Science and Health at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. She had served as associate dean of the College since 1998.

“Over the years, Sandra DeYoung has earned the respect of her peers and of students through her numerous professional accomplishments and by playing a major role in many initiatives at the University,” said President Arnold Speert. “I look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role as dean of the College of Science and Health.”

A professor of nursing, DeYoung joined the William Paterson faculty in 1985. Prior to assuming the position of associate dean of science and health in 1998, she served as chair of the nursing department from 1987 to 1998. She has played a major role in numerous university initiatives, including chair of the Faculty Senate, 1996-1998; coordinator of a campus-wide analysis of academic programs, 1994-95, and chair of the planning council. She also initiated the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at the University, which is designed to help women students overcome barriers to careers in the science professions.

Previously, DeYoung served as assistant professor of nursing at Bergen Community College from 1979 to 1985, and instructor at Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing from 1972 to 1979.
DeYoung is vice chairperson of the board of trustees of the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff, where she also serves as chair of the strategic planning committee. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, the International Nursing Honor Society, the American Association for Higher Education, and the Association for Institutional Research. In 1994, she was awarded the New Jersey States Nurses Association Award for Excellence in Nursing Education.

A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University with a bachelor of science degree in nursing and nursing administration, De Young earned a master of arts degree and a master of education degree in nursing education, and a doctorate in nursing education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is a resident of Oakland, N.J.

William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey, offers 30 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs through five colleges: Arts and Communication, Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Located on 370 hilltop acres in Wayne, the University enrolls approximately 11,000 students and provides housing for nearly 2,300 students. The institution's 358 full-time faculty are highly distinguished and diverse scholars and teachers, many of whom are recipients of prestigious awards and grants from the Fulbright Program (26 scholars), the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the American Philosophical Society.
