HIGH MOUNTAIN SYMPHONY PRESENTS “THE MAGIC ORCHESTRA”
ON NOVEMBER 21 AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY IN WAYNE
World-renowned musical comedian Dan Kamin will perform “The
Magic Orchestra” with William Paterson University’s
High Mountain Symphony, under the direction of guest conductor Patrick
Reynolds, on Sunday, November 21 at 3 p.m. in the Shea Center for
Performing Arts on campus.
Kamin created “The Magic Orchestra” as a way of introducing
children to the beauty and power of classical music. Standards by
Handel, Grieg, Ponchielli and Leroy Anderson will be part of the
unique program.
Prior to the concert, young visitors will be introduced to various
instruments in the Shea Lobby at 2 p.m. during an instrument “petting
zoo.”
Kamin is a popular guest artist with symphonies around the world.
His other shows include “The Lost Elephant,” “The
Musical Mime” and a pops program, “The Horrible History
of Music.” He wrote “Charlie Chaplin’s One-Man
Show,” which reveals the secrets of Chaplin’s comic
art and includes a preface by Marcel Marceau. Kamin also created
Johnny Depp’s physical comedy routines in Benny and Joon and
trained Robert Downey, Jr. for his Oscar-nominated performance in
Chaplin.
During the past few seasons, Kamin has performed his “Comedy
Concertos” with the Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Singapore
symphonies; directed several productions of classic plays in his
hometown of Pittsburgh; and performed solo shows throughout the
United States and England.
Reynolds is in his ninth year on the faculty at the University of
Dayton where he is an associate professor of music. Reynolds also
is the assistant conductor of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra
and conductor of the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. In recent
seasons he has appeared as guest conductor of the Annapolis Symphony
Orchestra, the Arlington Symphony Orchestra and the Queens Symphony
Orchestra.
The High Mountain Symphony, established in 1986 as the Wayne Chamber
Orchestra, is the only professional orchestra in New Jersey in permanent
residence at a university. The new name for the ensemble refers
to a local and well-known nature preserve in Wayne that borders
the University’s campus. The Symphony is underwritten, in
part, by William Paterson University. High Mountain Symphony is
also funded, in part, by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage
Council at Passaic County Community College through the State/County
Block Grant Program of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department
of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
This concert is partially supported by a grant from Pennsylvania
Performing Arts on Tour, developed and funded by the Vira I Heinz
Endowment; the William Penn Foundation; the Pennsylvania Council
on the Arts, a state agency; and The Pew Charitable Trusts; and
administered by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
Tickets are $30 standard, $27 for senior citizens and William Paterson
community, $8 for William Paterson students (limit two per ID) and
youth 17 and under. For directions or to purchase tickets, please
