William Paterson University Presents “The Oedipus Cycle”
“The Oedipus Cycle,” an epic story of destiny, love,
betrayal and self-discovery, will be staged in the Shea Center for
Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on October 19 at William Paterson University
in Wayne.
The play, by the Greek playwright Sophocles, begins in the plague-stricken
city of Thebes, where Oedipus, the king, has been told by the oracle
at Delphi that the only way he can save his people is by finding
and expelling the man who murdered Laius, the former king of Thebes.
Oedipus’s wife, Jocasta, who is also Laius’s widow,
tells her husband not to trust premonitions. However, through a
series of events, Oedipus comes to realize that he not only murdered
his father but also married his mother. He then stabs out his eyes
and is exiled from Thebes.
The drama will be staged by the National Players, America’s
longest running classical touring company, which is committed to
the formation of young theatrical talent and audiences.
Tickets are $22 standard, $20 for senior citizens, William Paterson
faculty, staff, and alumni and $8 for students. For directions or
to purchase tickets, please call the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371.
