Political Policies Under Discussion at William Paterson University
The Presidential election, Iraq, the Sudan, and other political
hot spots around the globe will be topics of discussion this month
and next during a number of events at William Paterson University
sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the Graduate
Program in Public Policy and International Affairs. All events will
be held on the campus in Wayne. Admission is free and open to the
public.
October 15
World Food Day Teleconference: The
Politics of Hunger: What’s at Stake?
Participants include Dr. Werner Kiene, representative of the U.N.
World Food Program to the Bretton Woods Institutions, and Ray Suarez,
senior correspondent, PBS, Jim Lehrer NewsHour. This event will
be held from noon to 3:00 p.m. in the Martini Teleconference Center,
Hobart Hall.
October 20
The Iraq War and the Draft
Issues and policies of concern to the William Paterson community
as they relate to the Iraq War. Participants include Mike Hoffman,
Iraq Veterans Against the War, an ex-Marine who served in Iraq;
and Sue Niederer, mother of a soldier killed in Iraq. This event
will be held from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in Science Hall 200A.
October 21
The Crisis in Darfur
The speaker is Dr. Amir Idris, assistant professor of African and
African-American Studies at Fordham University. He is a native of
the Darfur region of the Sudan and has intimate knowledge of the
political and humanitarian crisis occurring there. This event will
be held from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in Raubinger Hall, Room 101.
October 28
The New Centers of Dynamic Change:
India, China, Brazil
The speaker, Dr. Prem Shankar Jha, is an internationally renowned
economist and journalist for a number of major Indian newspapers
and journals. He is a former information advisor to the prime minister
of India and a former U.N. official and has recently completed a
book on globalization. He will discuss economic reforms in India
and China: their impact on the region and implications for international
politics. Also speaking is Anna Szterenfeld, Latin America editor
of the Economist Intelligence Unit. She is responsible for analysis
of major political and economic events in the region of interest
to international business executives and organizations. She will
speak on political risk in Latin America--market reforms versus
democratic rewards. This event will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the
Martini Teleconference Center, Hobart Hall.
November 9
Faces of Globalization: Argentina - Economic Collapse and Popular
Response -An Illustrated Lecture
Photo journalist Jim Harney has spent the last two decades interviewing,
photographing and accompanying people caught up in the violence
of war and economic chaos in this hemisphere. In this lecture he
will explain Argentina’s recent economic collapse through
an analysis of global neo-liberal policies and discuss the forms
of popular resistance and attempts at democratic governance that
have grown up in its wake. The event will be held from 12:30 to
2:00 p.m. in the Atrium Auditorium.
November 16
Roundtable on Latin American Politics
Participants include: Dr. Martin Weinstein, professor of political
science, William Paterson University; Dr. Claudia Baez-Camargo,
adjunct professor, William Paterson University; Jennifer Collins,
Ph.D. candidate, University of California, San Diego, and adjunct
professor. This event will be held from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. in Raubinger
Hall, Room 101.
November 19
Post-Election Analysis
This event will be held from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in Science Hall,
Room 200A. Speakers to be announced.
December 10
Faculty Research Seminar: Perspectives on the Crisis of the Nile
Water Regime
This event will be held in the Atrium Auditorium from 3:30 to 5:00
p.m. The speaker is Dr. Aaron Tesfaye, assistant professor of political
science at William Paterson University.
