William Paterson University Presents Summer Camps and Workshops for Students
Topics include jazz improvisation, comedy writing and performing, wealth and investing and nursing

William Paterson University in Wayne is sponsoring eight weeklong camps and workshops throughout July for middle school, high school and college students who would like to expand their knowledge regarding academic or personal interests.

College of the Arts and Communication:

Band Workshop,” July 11-17, 2004 (credit or non-credit)
The daily schedule includes a large ensemble rehearsal, music classes, instrumental master classes and evening music activities. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in various small ensembles, including brass choir, woodwind choir and percussion ensemble. The week will culminate with a special concert presented in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on July 17 at 8 p.m. Application deadline: June 30, 2004. For additional information, contact J. “Comedy Workshop,” July 10-17, 2004 (credit or non-credit)
Everyone who enjoys a good laugh is invited to study, write, and perform comedy this summer with some of the funniest minds in the industry today, including members of the American Comedy Institute of New York City. This program offers both credit and noncredit classes in stand-up comedy writing and performing, sketch comedy writing and performing, sitcom writing, and improv as a team sports event. Open to high school seniors, college students, and older, it includes a field trip to a New York comedy club and visits by guest speakers from the world of professional comedy. The workshop culminates in final performances of stand-up, sketch, and improv. Application deadline: June 30, 2004. “11th Annual Jazz Improvisation Workshop,” July 25-31, 2004 (credit or non-credit)
Legendary jazz greats Billy Taylor and Clark Terry will be artists-in-residence during seven intense days of improvisation and performance for students aged 14 and older. In addition to classes in improvisation, arranging and jazz history, the program includes an evening at the New York City jazz club Iridium, world-renowned artists in nightly clinics and concerts, and a final concert with students and resident faculty. “Drawing Marathon,” July 25-31, 2004 (credit or non-credit)
This workshop offers a six-day immersion experience in drawing from 9 a.m. to
9 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on drawing workshops work with faculty members, who will provide instruction on still life, landscape, figure and experimental techniques. The course will culminate with the creation of a 100-foot-long mural drawing. Media will include pencil, charcoal, color pastel or oil crayon, ink, and mixed media. Activities include movies, performances, slide talks, discussions of student works, and a visit to a New York City museum. Application deadline: June 30, 2004. “Money Management Camp for Middle School Students,” July 25-30, 2004
“Wealth and Investing Camp for High School Students,” July 25-30, 2004

Through these age-appropriate workshops, The E*TRADE Financial Learning Center will teach students ways to increase their personal wealth. Topics include personal financial planning basics, saving and borrowing, comparison shopping, and investing and trading. These programs will take place in the E*TRADE Financial Learning Center, a state-of-the-art simulated trading room located in the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road. Tuition: $499 for non-credit commuters, $649 for non-credit residents. College of Humanities and Social Sciences:

“Summer Writing Camps for High School Students,” July 25-30, 2004

Students who are considering careers as professional journalists, poets, novelists, public relations specialists and editors can explore a diverse range of forms and styles including essays, poetry, fiction, reportage and screenwriting. The curriculum is designed to sharpen skills and assist the writer in finding his or her own personal voice and writing style. Participants will create a portfolio of samples in a variety of styles and formats. Full and partial scholarships that are available. Registration deadline: July 12. College of Science and Health

Future Nurses Camp for High School Students,” July 26-30, 2004
This camp will introduce high school students to real-life nursing experiences and provide training for professional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, which includes training in the use of defibrillator. Activities will include simulated patient care, practice sessions on other students, hospital experience and a field trip. Topics include heart sounds, lung sounds, vital sign practice, wound care, infection precautions, and surgical hand scub. All applicants must submit a letter of recommendation. Registration deadline is June 15. Tuition: $599 for non-credit commuters. Cost includes CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) professional resuscitation course, use of University lab equipment, lunch Monday through Thursday and a lunch buffet on Friday for participants and parents.
