William Paterson University Observes African Heritage Month

Lectures, plays and musical events support the theme of “History in the Making: Contemporary Black Issues,” during William Paterson University’s month-long observance of African Heritage Month. Other events for the month include a play focusing on the philosophies and times of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, as well as a night devoted to the sounds of jazz music.

February 3
The opening ceremony for African Heritage Month will be held on Tuesday, February 3 in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom at 12:30 p.m. Bakari Kitwana, author of “The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and Crisis in African American Culture” and former executive editor of “The Source,” will present his lecture, “Hip-Hop’s Transition from a Cultural Movement to Political Power.”

February 4
The Pin Points Theatre Group will present their critically acclaimed play, “The Meeting,” a powerful drama exploring the question of what would have happened if Malcolm X and Martin Luther King had met before they were assassinated. The performance will be held in the Shea Center for Performing Arts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at $3 standard, $2 for William Paterson faculty and staff and $1 for William Paterson students. February 5
“Back to Jazz,” an annual event featuring the music and sounds of talented students, alumni, and others, will be held in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom at 8 p.m.

February 5-8
“Shakin the Mess Outta Misery,” a play depicting a young woman who shares her upbringing by re-living her experiences with the women who raised her, will be held in Hunziker Theater on February 5 and 6 at 8 p.m. and on February 7 and 8 at 3 p.m. For ticket information, please contact 973-720-2176.

February 8
The Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Chapel will hold a mass for African Heritage Month at 7:30 p.m.

February 10
A luncheon will be held in honor of reggae legend Bob Marley at 12:30 p.m. in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom.

February 19
The NAACP Ball will be held in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom at 8 p.m. For ticket information, contact Campus Activities at 973-720-2271.

February 21
The bus will depart Lot 5 at 8:30 a.m. for the Harlem USA Tour. For details and ticket information contact Campus Activities at 973-720-2271.

February 22
The African American Alumni Gospel Concert will be held at 6 p.m. in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom.

February 24
The Black Women Experience will be held in the Machuga Student Center Pioneer Restaurant at 7 p.m. Details TBA.

February 26
The month’s activities will conclude with a Reflections Ceremony in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom at 12:30 p.m. Alumni and guests will reflect on their years after graduation.
