High Mountain Symphony to Pay Tribute to Musical legends at William
Paterson University
The High Mountain Symphony at William Paterson University, under the
artistic direction of orchestra conductor Paul Hostetter, will perform
a selection of works by famous composers on Saturday, February 21
at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.
The program will open with one of Ludwig von Beethoven’s most
dramatic works, “Creatures of the Prometheus,” the tale
of a man and woman, formed out of clay, who receive the gift of reasoning
after hearing Apollo’s music. The piece’s energetic nature
and playful quality distinguish it from Beethoven’s works composed
after the turn of the century.
The High Mountain Symphony will also perform Georges Bizet’s
“Carmen Suite,” considered to be the composer’s
most famous work and one of the world’s most popular operas.
In 1967, Rodion Shchedrin, a formidable Russian composer and conductor,
transformed selections from “Carmen” into a famous ballet.
Also on the program is Jean Sibelius’s famous work “Valse
Triste,” which has generated numerous performances and offers
a variety of instrumental combinations. The work also serves as accompaniment
to the play “Kuolema.” The concert will conclude with
Igor Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite.”
Hostetter has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous orchestras
including the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the American Composers
Orchestra and the Philharmonia Virtuosi. He has also worked with the
New York City Opera Company and the Genesis Opera Company. He currently
performs as a percussionist with the Perspectives Ensemble.
The High Mountain Symphony is underwritten, in part, by William Paterson
University. It is also funded, in part, by the Passaic County Cultural
and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College through the
State/County Block Grant Program of the New Jersey State Council on
the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment
for the Arts.
Tickets are $25 standard, $20 for senior citizens and William Paterson
community, $8 for William Paterson students (limit two per ID) and
youth 17 and under. Concerts are held in Shea Auditorium. Pre-concert
conversations will take place in Shea 101 at 7 p.m.
