HALCYON TRIO TO PERFORM IN MIDDAY CONCERT AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

The Halcyon Trio, which has consistently won rave reviews for their energetic performance style, emotional depth, interesting repertoire, and immaculate ensemble playing, will perform at William Paterson University in Wayne on Thursday, February 5, in Shea Center on campus as part of the University’s Midday Artist Series. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. Admission is $3.

The trio – Brett Deubner, viola, Gary Kirkpatrick, piano, and Andrew Lamy, clarinet, will present Kleines Konzert by 20th century Austrian composer Alfred Uhl; Film Music from Pasture Songs, a 2002 work by Gary Pratt which was arranged for the trio by New Jersey composer Trent Johnson, and Trio by Gordon Jacob, a 20th century American composer.

The trio masterfully carries the torch of the clarinet, viola, and piano genre invented by Mozart himself—a combination of instruments still unsurpassed in lyricism, contrast, agility, color, and resonance. Recent engagements include concerts in New York and New Jersey, as well as throughout the United States and in Amsterdam and Germany. The trio will present the world premiere performances of Lalo Schifrin’s Triple Concerto for Clarinet, Viola, Piano and Orchestra (the world's first of its kind) with Anne Manson and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in September 2004.

Committed to expanding the repertoire for their genre, the trio has commissioned new works by Lalo Schifrin, Gary Pratt, Raymond Torres-Santos, and by rising-star New Jersey composer Trent Johnson. The Halcyon Trio's debut CD includes the world-premiere recording of Johnson's new trio, and the compact disc recording premiere of Uhl’s Kleines Konzert.

Deubner has performed as a guest artist with the Tokyo, Vermeer, Chicago, and Colorado quartets. The former violist of the Essex String Quartet and founding violist of the Elements Quartet, he has toured with the London Symphony Orchestra, led the viola sections of the Rochester Philharmonic, the Princeton Symphony, the Heidelberg Opera Orchestra, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He has performed at many major festivals and released numerous chamber music recordings.

Kirkpatrick, a professor of music at William Paterson, is an internationally acclaimed pianist who is recognized throughout the world as one of America’s foremost soloists, chamber musicians, and teachers. His numerous concert tours and television and radio broadcasts have taken him to over forty countries (encircling the globe more than three times). A strong proponent of 20th century music, he has explored new horizons in compositions created especially for him during his tenure as pianist with the renowned Verdehr Trio.

Lamy performs regularly with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under music director James Levine, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Other appearances include the New York Philharmonic, the Royal Opera of London, the State Orchestra of Mexico, and the American Symphony Orchestra. He can be heard on numerous recordings, including a Grammy Award-winning recording of Dvorak’s Requiem.
