URI CAINE TRIO TO PERFORM IN JAZZ ROOM SERIES AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

Uri Caine, a contemporary pianist and composer, will bring his trio to William Paterson University on Sunday, February 22 at 4 p.m. as part of the winter 2004 Jazz Room Series in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne.

Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $12 standard, $9 for senior citizens, non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.

The Uri Caine Trio features Uri Caine on piano, Drew Gress on bass and Ben Perowksi on drums. Prior to the concert, Caine and his trio will be the guests for “Sittin’ In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

Originally from Philadelphia, Caine began developing his composing skills at age 12 under the guidance of French pianist Bernard Peiffer. He continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania and in 1981 began playing jazz professionally in Philadelphia and New York, while working with musicians Philly Joe Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Benny Golson, Phil Woods and Max Roach.

In 1985, he made his recording debut with the Cornell Rochester-Gerald Veasley band. Caine has recorded 14 albums as a leader and during his career has embraced a variety of styles, ranging from blues and swing piano to free improvisation and jazz-klezmer fusion.

Now in its 26th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz- as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
