BARITONE STEPHEN BRYANT AND PIANIST JAMES WILLIAMS TO PERFORM SELECTIONS FROM MUSICAL THEATRE IN MIDDAY CONCERT AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

Baritone Stephen Bryant and pianist James Williams, both members of the music faculty at William Paterson University in Wayne, will present works by the great musical theatre composers Rogers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim and others on Thursday, February 26, in Shea Center on campus as part of the University’s Midday Artist Series. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. Admission is $3.

The concert will include songs from Carousel by Rogers and Hammerstein, including “Soliloquy,” “Younger than Springtime,” and “Some Enchanted Evening.” Also on the program are “Being Alive” from Company and “Everybody Says Don’t” from Anyone Can Whistle, both by Stephen Sondheim. Other selections include “Danny Boy,” “If I Were the King of the Forest” from The Wizard of Oz, “Impossible Dream” from Man of Lan Mancha, “Feelin' Good” from Roar of the Greasepaint, and “Ol' Man River” from Showboat.

Bryant, a professor of music at William Paterson, is also director of choral activities at the University. His distinguished career in concert and opera has taken him around the world, with acclaimed performances in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. A bass-baritone, his repertoire extends from Bach and Handel to today’s most prominent composers. In recent seasons he has become one of the premier interpreters of the works of Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun. He created the role of Dante in the world premiere of Tan Dun’s opera, Marco Polo, which he performed at the Munich Biennale, the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, New York City Opera, and with the Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo.

Williams is one of the most sought after pianists on the New York jazz scene. He first gained recognition as a pianist and music director with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He has played, toured and recorded with such prominent artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, George Duvivier, Art Farmer, Kenny Burrell and many others. Williams is featured on dozens of recordings and since producing his own album "Alter Ego" in 1984, he has gone on to produce albums for many other musicians, including Phineas Newborn, Jr. and Harold Mabern. As a performer and composer, Williams has been praised in the reviews of countless publications worldwide. He has published a folio of his original piano compositions and several of his tunes appear on other artists' albums, including those of Art Farmer, Kenny Barron and Victor Lewis.
