WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY PRESENTS “OTHELLO”

William Shakespeare’s classic play “Othello” will be staged at William Paterson University’s Shea Center for Performing Arts on March 22 at 7:30 p.m. The critically acclaimed Aquila Theater Company will present the play.

The story begins with the secret marriage of Othello, a Moor and mercenary for the Venetian army, and Desdemona, the daughter of a high-powered senator. Othello’s ensign and confidant, Iago, becomes envious of Othello’s conquests and is enraged at being passed over for a promotion. He seeks revenge by planting seeds of jealousy and doubt into Othello’s mind about his wife’s fidelity, while advising Desdemona to act in ways that will only fuel her husband’s suspicions. In this production, only the audience is aware of Iago’s villainous plan.

The Aquila Theatre Company presents this production as part of its 2003-2004 North American tour. Founded in 1991 by Peter Meineck, the company has gained a well-earned international reputation as one of the foremost producers of touring classical theatre. Aquila is also the company in residence at the Center for Asian Studies at New York University.

Funding for this production of “Othello” comes from the National Endowment for the Arts, through a new program, “Shakespeare in American Communities,” a national theater touring initiative, which brings professional performances of Shakespeare’s fundamental works, accompanied by educational programs, to small and mid-size cities in all 50 states.

Tickets are $22 standard, $20 for senior citizens and William Paterson community, $8 William Paterson students, limit two per ID. Children under 5 years of age will not be admitted to this event.
