RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHER TO SPEAK AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

George Tice, a photographer who specializes in New Jersey’s urban and industrial landscapes, will present a lecture and slide presentation ” at William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m. In the event of severe inclement weather, the lecture will be held on Sunday, March 28 at 2 p.m. The lecture, originally scheduled for December 7, was postponed due to inclement weather.

The program, “George A. Tice Presents a Retrospective of His Career in Photography, 1953-2003,” will be held in the David and Lorraine Cheng Library auditorium; a reception will follow. Admission is $10, $5 for William Paterson faculty and staff, and free for students and members of the Friends of the David and Lorraine Cheng Library. Tickets may be purchased the day of the event.

Tice, who was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree at the University’s commencement ceremony in May2003, is primarily known for his photographs of theatres, shops, houses, apartment buildings, factories and street scenes. His pictures capture a wordless and sometimes heartbreaking record of what urban life aspires to, as well as its successes and failures.

One of Tice’s most famous works is the series of photographs that make up “Paterson.” He became fascinated with this project because of his interest in the natural areas of Garret Mountain and the Passaic Falls. Tice depicted the true essence of a modern city with his photographs of storefronts, weed-grown vacant lots and factory exteriors.

Tice has published 13 books and six limited edition portfolios. His photographs have been widely collected and are included in major public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and The Newark Museum. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Bradford Fellowship and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library, which consists of a diverse group of library supporters who first came together in 1998. This group advocates the Library’s importance as an integral resource of the University and broader community. They provide fellowships to help focus community support on special projects and raise funds to purchase books, equipment and other materials beyond the Library’s budget. The group also encourages gifts of materials for the Library’s collections and programs. A special ongoing campaign to raise funds to support student success will be announced at the March 7 lecture.
