William Paterson University Observes African
Heritage Month
Lectures, performances and musical events
support the theme of “Embracing the Legacy,” during
William Paterson University’s observance of African Heritage
Month in February. Events listed include:
Wednesday, February 2
Step Afrika! USA (SAUSA) is a U.S.-based percussive dance ensemble
from Washington, D.C. connected to the Step Afrika! International
Cultural Festival in Soweto, South Africa. SAUSA highlights the
African American fraternity and sorority art form of stepping. Also
included in their repertoire are tap, South African dances such
as Zulu, gumboot, and modern, hip hop and freestyle dancing. Open
to the public.

Thursday, February 3
“Sankofa,” film presentation and discussion with Kamau
Kenyatta, adjunct professor, African, African American, and Caribbean
Studies, William Paterson University

“Warning: The Facts You Should Know About the Mystery of Black
Hair,” a lecture by Kamau Kenyatta, adjunct professor, African,
African American, and Caribbean Studies, William Paterson University.

Panel Discussion and Forum: “From Dying to Vote to Vote to
Die: Black Politics at the Turn of the Century.” Sponsored
by the Department of Political Science, Political Science Club and
Pi Sigma Alpha

All events are open to the public. African Heritage
Month is supported in part by the Student Government Association,
Student Activities Programming Board, Brothers for Awareness, CARIBSA,
EBONEE, National Pan-Hellenic Council, NAACP-William Paterson Chapter,
SABLE, Students for African Unity, United Cultural Greek Council,
Department of Political Science, Department of African, African
American and Caribbean Studies, the J. Victor Machuga Foundation,
and the Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership.
