William Paterson University Offers New Bachelor’s
Degree in Asian Studies to Prepare Students for a Wide Range of
Careers
—Program contributes to rising trend toward internationalization
of curriculum
A bachelor’s degree in Asian studies, with courses taught
by faculty from a wide array of departments and programs, has been
created by William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. to prepare
graduates for a variety of career opportunities.
The comprehensive program, housed in the College of Humanities and
Social Sciences, is built on University-wide faculty strengths.
Asian studies faculty, including many Fulbright scholars, are based
in departments such as art, anthropology, communication, economics,
geography, history, languages and cultures, philosophy, political
science, sociology, and women’s studies. They provide expertise
and research covering most of Asia, including India, Pakistan, China,
Japan and Southeast Asia.
“This program is the way of the future,” says Isabel
Tirado, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “Much
of the world’s population lives in Asia, and because United
States trade with Asia is nearly twice that with Europe our economy
has become very interconnected with countries like Japan, China,
and India. Asian studies contributes to the growing internationalization
of our College’s curriculum.”
The 30-credit bachelor’s degree program integrates the study
of language with Asian history, culture, economics, and politics.
Students may choose from East Asian or South Asian track courses,
and language courses include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Hindi.
Graduates of the program will be qualified to pursue careers in
teaching, government, international business, non-governmental agencies
and organizations, journalism, and communication, or continue with
advanced study.
A sampling of courses includes Politics of Asia: India and China,
Buddhist Philosophy, The Pacific War, Chinese Ink Painting, Economic
Growth and Development, Women and Gender in Modern South Asia, Japanese
History through Cinema, and a seminar on East Asian History.
With the addition of this new degree program, William Paterson now
offers 32 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs through its five
colleges: Arts and Communication, Christos M. Cotsakos College of
Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science
and Health.
