BILL COSBY DREAM BAND, FEATURING CLARK TERRY AND JIMMY HEATH, TO PERFORM IN BENEFIT JAZZ CONCERT AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY IN WAYNE ON NOVEMBER 8 TO SUPPORT CREATION OF THE CLARK TERRY CONCERT HALL AT THE UNIVERSITY
The Bill Cosby Dream Band, featuring jazz legend Clark Terry, fellow jazz great Jimmy Heath, Terry’s Titans of Jazz Big Band, William Paterson University students and other surprise guests, will perform in a benefit jazz concert on Tuesday, November 8 at 8 p.m. in Shea Center at William Paterson University in Wayne.
Cosby will serve as master of ceremonies and will perform as part of the band for this special fundraising musical performance, which will benefit the creation of the Clark Terry Concert Hall at William Paterson University. Cosby will not be performing his comedy concert.
Last year, Terry, a major figure in the history of jazz, donated his extensive archive, including manuscripts, recordings and memorabilia, to William Paterson, home of the internationally renowned jazz studies program. As part of the establishment of the Clark Terry Archive, the University announced its intention to raise funds for the Clark Terry Concert Hall that will house the archival materials and serve as the new home for William Paterson’s acclaimed Jazz Room Series and other performances.
“We are thrilled to have Bill Cosby join our efforts to build an outstanding concert hall that will benefit students and the community on an ongoing basis,” says Arnold Speert, president of William Paterson University. “The hall will ensure that the wealth of important material in the Clark Terry Archive will be visible and accessible to scholars and jazz fans.”
Terry’s years with Count Basie and Duke Ellington in the late 1940s and 1950s established him as a world-class jazz artist. He also mentored a young Miles Davis, has led his own ensembles through a long career, and is recognized as a “founding father” of jazz education. Now 84, Terry continues to actively perform and recently joined the jazz faculty at William Paterson.
Heath has long been recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist and a magnificent composer and arranger. He has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Dizzy Gillespie to Wynton Marsalis. During his career, Heath has performed on more than 100 record albums including seven with The Heath Brothers and twelve as a leader, and has written more than 125 compositions, many of which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by other artists.
Tickets for the concert are $250 and $100. Special sponsorship packages are also available. For information, call the Shea Center Box Office at William Paterson University at 973-720-2371.
