JERRY DODGION JOINS THE WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE FOR THE FALL JAZZ ROOM SERIES FINALE ON OCTOBER 30

Jerry Dodgion, saxophonist, composer and arranger, will be joined by the William Paterson University Jazz Ensemble directed by David Demsey on Sunday, October 30 for the final concert of the fall 2005 Jazz Room Series at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ.

The program will include Dodgion’s own works and several arrangements from the days when he was the original lead alto player in the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. Co -founded by trumpeter Thad Jones, the first director of the William Paterson Jazz Studies Program, the Orchestra became known as The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and is now in permanent residency at the University.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard and $12 for senior citizens.

Prior to the concert, Dodgion will be the guest for “Sittin In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

Dodgion has performed and recorded with some of the foremost and diverse names in jazz, from Quincy Jones and Benny Goodman to Marian McPartland and Phil Woods. He currently leads his own newly formed group, The Joy of Sax, which features five saxophones and a rhythm section.

Now in its 28th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.

Funding for The Jazz Room at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.  For more information, call the Shea Center for Performing Arts Box Office at 973-720-2371.
