THE JAZZ ROOM SERIES AT WILLIAM PATERSON ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 20
AT 4 P.M.
Grammy award winning saxophonist Ray Santos will perform with the
William Paterson University Latin Jazz Ensemble directed by Chico
Mendoza at William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, February
20 as part of the spring 2005 Jazz Room Series.
The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing
Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or
on the day of the performance at $12 standard and $9 for senior
citizens, non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty,
staff and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.
Prior to the concert, Santos will be the guest for “Sittin
In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room
101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.
Originally from New York City, Santos became interested in Caribbean
and swing music of the 30s and 40s. Santos graduated from Juilliard
and has played, recorded, composed and arranged for frontline orchestras
throughout the Latin music industry for more than 50 years. In 1992,
he earned an Academy Award nomination for his arrangement of “Beautiful
Maria of My Soul” for the movie “The Mambo Kings.”
Santos has collaborated with numerous musicians including Linda
Ronstadt, Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri. He has also taught at
the City College of New York and is regarded as an authority on
Caribbean music. In 1998, Santos was invited by jazz great Wynton
Marsalis to conduct the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in a series
of three concerts, “Con Alma/Jazz With a Latin Tinge.”
Now in its 27th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is
one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events
in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass
the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional
jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz as well
as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has
won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and
the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
