Middle East Expert Will Present Series of Lectures at William Paterson University in Wayne from December 6 to 8

Josef Olmert, an expert on the Middle East, Syria, Lebanon, Palestinian and Israeli politics, will present a series of discussions at William Paterson University in Wayne from Tuesday, December 6 to Thursday, December 8, 2005.  The lectures are free and the public is invited to attend.

Olmert will speak on Tuesday, December 6 at 7 p.m. in Raubinger 01 on “The Sharon Plan: How the New Kadimah Party Hopes to Move Israel and Her Neighbors Towards a Lasting Peace.”  On Wednesday, December 7, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in Science 200B, Olmert will join with students from various courses for a talk and discussion on Israeli-Palestinian relations. On Thursday, December 8, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in Hunziker Wing 101, he will speak about “America, Syria, Iran and Israel: Averting Disaster in the Middle East.”

Olmert holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics in Middle East history.  He has served as director of the Government of Israeli Press Office and a senior advisor to then-Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzhak Shamir, during the first Gulf War. He was a senior policy advisor to Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Arens. He has been a political columnist for Israel’s largest circulation daily newspaper for many years, and is the author of three books on the Middle East. A highly sought speaker, he has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, City College of New York, and York University, and has lectured widely at conferences all over the world.
