William Paterson University to Present Yo
Soy Latina
Yo Soy Latina, a play that delves into the lives of Latina women
who grew up bilingual and bicultural in the United States, will
be staged in the Shea Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on
March 3 at William Paterson University in Wayne.
The play features the individual stories of six Latina women who
acknowledge their differences from one another and discover they
share fond memories of their native lands and how they were influenced
by vibrant cultures. Through various anecdotes the play examines
the media’s idealized images of women, issues of self-identity
and acceptance, and the preconceptions experienced within their
racially and culturally different Latino backgrounds.
The play is directed and produced by Linda Nieves-Powell, an accomplished
writer, producer and director. She has presented Yo Soy Latina at
more than 50 colleges and universities throughout the country.
Tickets are $3 standard and free for William Paterson faculty, staff
and students. For directions or to purchase tickets, please call
the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371.
All proceeds will be donated to MADRE, an international women’s
human rights organization engaged in supporting the victims of the
tsunami disaster.
The event is sponsored in part by the University’s Student
Government Association, the Women’s History Month Committee,
Campus Activities and Student Leadership/J. Victor Machuga Foundation,
the Women’s Center, the Counseling, Health and Wellness Center
and the Office of Residence Life.
