William Paterson University Presents One-Day
Conference On Work, Migration and Identity Formation
A one-day conference designed to provide a detailed history of Hispanics’
acclimation into American society and their future prospects and
challenges, will be held by William Paterson University in Wayne
on Friday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Martini Teleconference
Center in Hobart Hall on the main campus. A reception and musical
performance by Los Chantas Tango Trio Y Mario Barreiro will follow
at 3:30 p.m. in Hobart Manor.
The conference, titled “Work, Migration and Identity Formation,”
features sessions on immigration and survival in Chicago at the
beginning of the 20th century, educational attainment among Hispanics,
the Latinization of American culture and coverage of census statistics
regarding Hispanic population growth.
Patricia Fernandez-Kelly, a senior lecturer in the department of
sociology at Princeton University, will deliver the keynote address,
“Murdering the Alphabet,” at 11 a.m. The lecture will
feature a discussion about identity and entrepreneurship among second
generation Cubans, West Indians, and Central Americans who are living
in Miami.
Fernandez-Kelly is an internationally recognized expert in international
development. She has written extensively in the fields of immigration,
women in the labor force, global economic change and industrial
restructuring. She co-produced the Emmy Award-winning documentary,
“The Global Assembly Line,” and has received awards
from the Ford Foundation and the Social Science Research Council.
The conference is sponsored by the University’s College of
Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Languages and Cultures,
Latin American Studies Program and Urban Studies Program.
Registered conference attendees are eligible for five professional
hours or five CEUS. Registration fee is $40. William Paterson faculty,
