ABSTRACT WORKS BY NEW JERSEY ARTIST JEFFREY MASON ON VIEW AT BEN SHAHN GALLERIES

My Blue Baby

Jeffrey Mason, a New Jersey artist whose work is abstract in nature, presents a one-person exhibit of paintings and drawings in the South Gallery of the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University in Wayne from September 18 through October 20, 2006. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is free. A reception for the exhibit will be held on Wednesday, September 20 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Mason’s drawings are executed with water-based ink on mylar.  “I chose mylar primarily for its resiliency, but soon discovered the varied possibilities during liquid erasure,” he explains.  “These possibilities, along with quick drying, often result in the unexpected.”

His paintings, also abstract, are composed of oil on canvas and share many similarities with his drawings.  “Qualities of line, shape, color, and texture dominate my thinking and direct my actions as I work,” he says.  “I do not assign any symbolic significance to elements within a given piece.  My primary intention is to create a felt spatial order that holds my attention.”

Mason has exhibited his works at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, the Morris Museum, New Jersey Center for Visual Arts, Trenton City Museum, and other galleries throughout New Jersey.  An art teacher at Park Lake School, a school for developmentally disabled children in Rockaway, Mason has taught at Raritan Valley Community College.  He is the recipient of several awards, including an artist/educator grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and the Teacher of the Year Award from the Educational Services Commission of Morris County.  A graduate of Bob Jones University with a bachelor of science degree in art education, Mason earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is a resident of Cranford.

The exhibit is one of three shows currently on view in the Ben Shahn Galleries. “More Than Meets the Eye:  Insight into the Artistic Process,” on view in the East Gallery, explores how artists imagine, recognize, and bring their art to fruition; the exhibit is curated by Sandy DeSando.  On view in the Court Gallery is the annual exhibit of works by the William Paterson University art faculty.

The exhibit is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Ben Shahn Galleries are wheelchair-accessible.  Large-print handouts are available.  For additional information, please call the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University at 973-720-2654.
