SHEBA SHARROW PRESENTS SOLO EXHIBIT AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY’S BEN SHAHN GALLERIES
Sheba Sharrow, whose many-layered paintings challenge the imagination, will present a solo exhibit at the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University in Wayne from January 30 through March 3, 2006. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. A reception for the exhibit will be held on Sunday, February 26, from 3 to 5 p.m.
The exhibit, titled “In Search of Duende,” is based on what “the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lora called duende—“a mysterious power’ that is felt but not easily explained, a dark force that is spiritual yet connected to the earth,” explains Peggy Barlow in the exhibit’s catalog essay.
According to the exhibit’s catalog, Sharrow “loves word plays, and her wry sense of humor cuts through otherwise dark subjects. While Dog (2005) was inspired by a news story about the rounding up of feral dogs in Athens before the 2004 Summer Olympics, it also refers to the use of dogs for torture at Abu Ghraib. Such layers of meaning imbue every painting.”
Sharrow is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and received an M.F.A. degree from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. She has received grant awards from the Pollack-Krasner Foundation, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and New Jersey Council on the Arts.
The exhibit is one of three shows on view concurrently in the Ben Shahn Galleries. Paintings by David Krivin (1895-1982), a Polish immigrant and self-taught New Jersey artist, are on view in the South Gallery. “Prints and Drawings” by Rene Bord, a French artist who explores themes of nature and the cosmos, are on view in the East Gallery.
The exhibit is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Ben Shahn Galleries are wheelchair-accessible. Large-print handouts are available. For additional information, please call the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University at 973-720-2654.
