New Lifelong Learning Courses Offered at William Paterson University’s Center for Continuing and Professional Education
----Business certificate courses, sales and marketing programs, and online professional development courses for teachers highlight the schedule

William Paterson University’s recently revamped Center for Continuing and Professional Education is offering several new courses and programs for adults interested in furthering their education or pursuing new interests. New for this fall are CEO Roundtables; test preparation courses for students and teachers; business certificate programs; sales and marketing programs; health, fitness and coaching curricula; and case-centered online professional development programs for educators and administrators. All programs are offered at the University’s state-of-the-art facility at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne, NJ.

“We have expanded our programs to serve a wider range of business, education, nursing and healthcare, and community professionals with a more diverse menu of lifelong learning courses and conferences,” says Bernadette Tiernan, the Center’s new executive director. “We are strengthening partnerships with business associations to explore new opportunities for certificate programs, and are meeting with business leaders to explore their needs and determine their potential for customized training.”

The CEO Roundtable is a business development support group limited to 12 business owners, company presidents or senior executives, and entrepreneurs who meet to discuss critical issues and brainstorm.  Each CEO Roundtable will establish its own set of topics for the year. Membership is required.

Online courses for educators are available in six content areas to meet recertification, professional development and personal interest needs. These are reading and literacy; special education; gifted education; equity and diversity; general education; and technology integration. These courses offer educators the latest research on content knowledge and instructional strategies. Participants collaborate with peers and receive instructor feedback.  All materials and assignments are accessed completely online. Courses are three weeks in length.

This year the Center is offering 20 new programs in sales and marketing including classes in the art of selling, which teaches participants to follow a selling skills model; word of mouth marketing; generational marketing; and marketing to small and mid-size businesses. Two classes, “Five Secrets for Exceptional Customer Service,” and “Marketing Mix and Tactics: Remarkable Results with Small Business Budgets,” led by instructor Vickie Lynn Morgan on October 23, focus on specific tips on how to create a customer service program and offer valuable information to structure a marketing plan.

Also new this year is “Coaching Principles,” a course which helps those who are beginning a coaching career in 2006 and 2007 to prepare for a state-mandated test, the NFHS/American Coaches Education Program (ACEP). The course, to be held on December 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will provide each coach with a professional field of study and proper training while working with schools. Designed to insure the safety of student athletes, this course also seeks to improve the overall quality of interscholastic sports. After completing the course, participants are ready to take a certification test.

The Workforce Development Program offers numerous healthcare, computer and business programs.  An Open House is held every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon for healthcare classes; every Wednesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for computer and business programs.
