HIGH MOUNTAIN SYMPHONY SEASON CONTINUES ON FEBRUARY 25
—Viswa Subbaraman, assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France, is guest conductor
The High Mountain Symphony at William Paterson University in Wayne continues its 2005-2006 concert season on Saturday, February 25, 2006 with a performance at 8 p.m. in Shea Center on campus. Viswa Subbaraman will be the guest conductor.
The program, titled “Echoes Through Europe,” will feature Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, Rossini’s Italian in Algiers and Symphony No. 1 by Brahms.
Subbaraman is the third of four guest conductors for the High Mountain Symphony’s 2005-2006 season selected from among hundreds of applicants. One will be chosen to become the music director of the Symphony beginning with the 2006-2007 season.
Currently the assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France where he works with music director Kurt Masur, Subbaraman performed the French premiere of Dukas’ Overture du Roi Lear, as well as the French premiere of the Bloch Symphonie pour Trombone, which has been released on a CD titled Tranquille. He has served as the visiting conductor of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, made his London debut with the Thames Philharmonia, and been a guest conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. and the Bombay Chamber Orchestra in India, among others. A graduate of Duke University with degrees in music and biology, Subbaraman earned a master of fine arts degree in music performance and orchestral conducting from Texas Tech University.
Tickets for the concert are $25, $20 for senior citizens, William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni, and $8 for William Paterson students and those ages 17 and younger. The concert will be preceded by a pre-concert conversation with the conductor beginning at 2 p.m. in Shea 101.
The High Mountain Symphony is the only professional orchestra in New Jersey in permanent residence at a university. The ensemble’s four-concert season will conclude with a performance on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 8 p.m. in Shea Center on the William Paterson campus.
The High Mountain Symphony is underwritten, in part, by William Paterson University. It is also funded, in part, by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College through the State/County Block Grant Program of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
