Composer and Bass Trombonist Tim Newman and Sextet to Perform in Jazz Room Series at William Paterson University on Sunday, October 1, 2006 at 4 p.m.
Tim Newman, a bass trombonist, teacher and composer, will perform with his sextet as part of William Paterson University’s Jazz Room Series on the campus in Wayne, N.J. on Sunday, October 1, 2006. Newman, who received his undergraduate degree from the University in jazz studies, is currently an instructor in William Paterson’s music department, where he teaches jazz history and other courses.
The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard and $12 for senior citizens, non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.
Prior to the concert, Newman will be the guest for “Sittin’ In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticket holders.
One of the few jazz bass trombonists on the scene today, Newman made his mark with his first CD as a leader, Altered Ego, which was released in 1999. He has also made numerous recordings with Toshiko Akiyoshi’s Jazz Orchestra, with whom he has toured and performed as a member for more than ten years. Additionally, Newman has recorded and appeared with such diverse artists as trombonists Slide Hampton and Buddy Morrow, trumpeters Luis "Perico" Ortiz and Joe Magnarelli, singer Mel Torme, multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson, pianist Mike Holober, organist Jack McDuff, and such groups as the Mario Bauza Afro-Cuban Orchestra, the Bill Mobley Jazz Orchestra, and They Might Be Giants. Newman appears regularly with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Now in its 29th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
