William Paterson University to Present Play about Civil Rights
William Paterson University will present a new play by David Barr III, “My Soul is a Witness,” which seeks to explain and understand the civil rights movement of the 1960s which generated massive societal changes in America through testimonials, stories, and gospel music on February 3 at 8 p.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne.
This documentary play features “witnesses” who explain the seminal events of the civil rights movement which lasted from 1955 to 1968. Actors portray key figures of the era including Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and President John F. Kennedy. It also includes characters who are unsung heroes, brave but not famous, such as those who marched for freedom or participated in non-violent protest.
The show is a production of The JENA Company which manages, books and produces new works by acclaimed artists. David Barr III is an award-winning playwright, and is the author of six plays.
Tickets to the show are $28; $24 for seniors 65 and older and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; and $8 for William Paterson students. For ticket information, call the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371.
